When symptoms of a cataract begin to appear, you may be able to improve your vision for a while by using new glasses, strong bifocals, magnification, appropriate lighting or other visual aids. Once the formation of a cataract seriously impairs your vision and affects your daily lifestyle, good vision can be restored safely with outpatient cataract surgery. Today, with the development of no stitch/small incision cataract surgery, many patients are experiencing a faster recovery and return to good vision.
Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. In fact, it is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States, with over 1.5 million cataract surgeries done each year. Nine out of ten people who have surgery regain good vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40.
No Stitch/small incision cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis. Before surgery, the patient is given an anesthetic to numb the eye and keep them comfortable. During surgery, the surgeon will remove your clouded lens, and replace it with a plastic intraocular lens (IOL) implant.
Most patients can resume daily activities almost immediately after surgery; however, vision may be blurry. The eye needs time to heal and adjust so that it can focus properly with the other eye. Follow up visits to the clinic are scheduled to evaluate progress.
Although there is no way to prevent the development of cataracts, loss of sight can be prevented. With modern technology, cataracts can be removed and good vision restored. If you are experiencing the symptoms of cataracts or other vision problems we encourage you to contact our office and obtain a comprehensive eye examination.
