What are my choices for cosmetic surgery to improve my eyes? Eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty is the surgical removal of excess skin, muscle and fatty tissue from the upper and lower eyelids. This surgery can restore the youthful appearance of your eyes by redefining the upper lid crease and removing the puffy bags below your eyes. In many cases it can help restore upper visual fields and reduce fatigue and strain from constant use of the forehead muscles to keep the eyes open.Botox injections are another alternative for those with finer lines and wrinkling around the eyes and forehead areas. It is a known as the "quick fix" because the injections take only minutes to do, plus the results are noticeable within 1-2 weeks with no downtime! Which surgery is right for me? Both Blepharoplasty and Botox restore a youthful appearance to your eyes. If your concern is related to drooping upper eyelids and not wrinkles, then a simple upper lid blepharoplasty may be right for you. For those with finer lines and wrinkles we recommend Botox. Botox is a temporary, quick and simple solution for crows feet around the eyes and worry lines on the forehead. Why is an Ophthalmologist the right choice for these procedures? An Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with three to five years of post medical school training in diseases and conditions of the eye. As an eye care specialist he or she would be the most familiar with all aspects of your eyes, including the structures surrounding them. What are the risks of cosmetic surgery? As with any surgery, there are potential risks to Blepharoplasty. It is important to be conservative, in order to prevent excessive removal of tissue, which can result in an "overdone" appearance. It is also important to remember that each person reacts differently to surgery. and there is always the danger of complications. You can reduce your risks by following the surgeons pre and post operative instructions. Potential complications will be discussed by your doctor prior to surgery. What can I expect during surgery? The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using a local anesthetic to numb the area around the eyes along with intravenous or oral sedatives. You will be awake during the procedure, but quite relaxed and insensitive to pain. You might feel some tugging and occasional discomfort. What can I expect after surgery? You will stay in a recovery area until the doctor feels you are ready to be taken home. (You should plan on having someone drive you for the next couple of days.) He will apply ointment to your eyes and give you a prescription for mild pain medication. You will be given instructions on the use of cold compresses, which will be applied frequently to minimize swelling and discoloration. The doctor will see you the next day to check your progress and then again a few days later to remove any stitches you might have. You will be sensitive to light, wind and other irritants and should plan on resting inside for a few days following surgery. What is the recovery period? People vary greatly in the amount of swelling that occurs after lid surgery. With the use of cold applications and avoidance of aspirin, swelling is usually resolved in 2 to 3 weeks. Am I a candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery? Blepharoplasty can change your look dramatically, but they will not meet unrealistic expectations.
